My son do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands. Proverbs 3:1

IN THIS CHAPTER OF PROVERBS WE SEE SET FORTH THE PRINCIPAL OF OBEDIENCE…….THE BIBLE IS AN INTENSELY PRACTICAL BOOK DESIGNED TO DIRECT OUR LIVING…..BIBLE KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS NEVER ENOUGH WE MUST AS BELIEVERS DEVELOP BIBLE PRACTICE IN OUR LIVES…..IT IS NECESSARY THAT WE ABSORB NOT JUST THE NATURAL BUT THE SPIRITUAL ASPECTS OF THE SCRIPTURES

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  James 1:22

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE BEGINS IN KNOWING WHAT GOD REQUIRES OF US, BUT WE PLEASE HIM ONLY WHEN WE DO WHAT WE KNOW

FOR JESUS DID SAY:  Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven.  Matt. 7:21

If a man love me, he will keep my words.  John 14:23

LET US ALSO REMEMBER IT IS NOT THE EXACT VERBAL BEARING OF THE LAW BUT THE WIDE REACHING PRINCIPALS UNDERLYING IT THAT CHRISTIANS ARE CALLED UPON TO TREASURE NOT RULES OF SACRIFICE BUT PRINCIPALS OF MERCY NOT PROHIBITING….THOU SHALL NOT STEAL BUT THE HIGHER PRECEPT….THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF ……FOR THOSE WHO LOVE IN SUCH A MANNER WOULD NEVER EVEN THINK OF STEALING FROM SOMEONE.

THERE IS A LOT OF SUPERSTITION ATTACHED TO THE BIBLE WHICH IS ONLY THAT…….HOWEVER THE BIBLE IS ONLY VALUABLE TO US AS IT INFLUENCES OUR DAILY LIFE………AND TO DO THIS IT MUST BE WRITTEN ON THE FLESHLY TABLETS OF OUR HEARTS…..IT MUST BECOME A REAL PART OF OUR LIVES AND THAT IS WHAT CHAPTER 3 OF PROVERBS IS TELLING US

My son do not forget my law…..OR TO MAKE IT CLEARER, DO NOT FORGET MY TEACHINGS…….BUT LET YOUR HEART KEEP MY COMMANDS

A HEARTFELT FAITH AND TRUST HIDES THE WORD OF GOD IN THE HEART THIS MEANS THAT WHICH IS NEEDED IS AN INTELLIGENT UNDERSTANDING OF DIVINE TRUTH

DIVINE TRUTH NEEDS TO COME TO US NOT JUST AS A JUMBLE OF WORDS BUT AS CLEAR IDEAS IMPRESSED ON A GOOD MEMORY OF THEM FOR THE LORD HAS INSTRUCTED……KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS IN YOUR HEART

AND IN SO DOING WE ARE REWARDED FOR THE WORD TELLS US IN Proverbs 3:2, For the length of days and long life, And peace they will add to you and Proverbs 4:10, Hear my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, OBEYING GOD AND LIVING BY HIS HOLY PRINCIPALS WILL RESULT IN BETTER HEALTH, LONGER LIFE AND A MORE PROSPERIOUS AND ABUNDANT LIFE

LET US TAKE UP FOR A FEW MOMENTS THE PRINCIPAL OF BALANCE IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE…..Proverbs 3:3, Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart

MERCY AND TRUTH ARE HEREIN ILLUSTRATED…..MERCY WHICH INCLUDES COMPASSION ON THE UNFORTUNATE AND THE SUFFERING.

UNFORTUNATLY WHEN IT COMES TO DEALING WITH SOCIETY’S PROBLEMS THE CHURCH HAS SOME CATCHING UP TO DO …….MANY CHURCH MEMBERS INCLUDING MYSELF……WE RARELY REACH OUTSIDE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE DIFFERENT FROM US OR LESS FORTUNATE.

QUITE OFTEN WHEN IT COMES TO FOR INSTANCE TAKE UP A COLLECTION  FOR A THANKSGIVING MEAL TO HELP POOR FAMILIES….THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHO IS A POOR FAMILY……NOBODY KNOWS ONE AND YOU HAVE TO CALL AROUND TO FIND ONE

THE FIRST STEP IN REACHING OUT IN THE NAME OF JESUS IS TO BE FRIENDLY ENOUGH TO FIND OUT THE NAME OF YOUR NEIGHBOR IN NEED ESPECIALLY YOUR DISADAVANTAGED NEIGHBOR

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind,  And you will be blessed… Luke 14:13-14

THE SCRIPTURES SPEAK MUCH OF TRUTH AND A MAN’S MIND IS RICH VERY MUCH IN PROPORTION TO THE TRUTH HE KNOWS AND TRUTH IS NEVER STRONGER THAN WHEN IT WALKS WITH LOVE.  C. Spurgeon

John 4:24, God is a Spirit, and his worshipers must worship in Spirit and truth.

TRUE WORSHIP IS THAT WHICH IS WHOLEHEARTED AND SINCERE AND THIS IS WHAT THE LORD DESIRES OF HIS CHURCH

WE AS BELIEVERS ARE TO WRITE THE THINGS OF GOD UPON OUR HEARTS.TEMPLEWORSHIPENDED WITH THE RENDING OF THE VEIL IN THETEMPLE  AND DEAD TRADITION AND ROTE RELIGION NEVER HAD A LIFE

THAT WHICH IS ENJOINED IN JOHN 4:24, THAT WHICH IS IN YOUR HEART AND SOUL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE PLACE AND THERE IS A REWARD FOR SUCH WORSHIP

Proverbs 3:4, And so find favor and high esteem.  In the sight of God and man

WE ALSO ARE TOLD……Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding.  Proverbs 3:5

Psalm 37:5, Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in him.

IN THIS LIFE WE MORTALS NEED DIVINE GUIDANCE AND THE LONGER WE LIVE THE MORE WE FEEL THE MYSTERY OF LIFE

AS AUTUMN LEAVES WE SOMETIMES FEEL BLOWN ABOUT BY THE DRIVEN WINDS OF LIFE…….AS COLUMBUS WE TRAVEL ON UNKNOWN SEAS AND WE SEE MORE THAN EVER OUR NEED OF A GUIDE TO SHOW US THE WAY THE WISE AND IN Psalms 16:11,…..(we are told)  You will show me the path of life; In your presence is fullness of joy;  At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

THE LOWEST ANIMALS ARE GUIDED BY GOD THROUGH UNCONSCIOUS INSTINCT AND WE MORTALS ARE GIVEN THE GREATER PRIVLEGE…..WE MAY CHOOSE TO ACCEPT OR REJECT THE ASSISTANCE OF THE DIVINE….THIS CAN BE A DANGEROUS PRIVLEGE

Proverbs 29:1…He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy

THIS WARNING IS GIVEN TO THE STUBORN SINFUL INDIVIDUAL….GOD IS LOVE….HE IS MERCIFUL AND HIS GRACE ALL SUFFICIENT BUT THERE COMES A TIME WHEN HE WILL DELIVER JUDGEMENT TO THE WICKED AS HE DID TO THE HARDENED PHARAOH

REJECT THE OPINONS OF THE WORLD THAT RUN CONTRARY TO THE WORD OF GOD…….WE ARE TO HUMBLE OURSELVES BEFORE THE GOD OF HEAVEN AND REJECT SIN…..THESE THREE THINGS WILL LEAD YOU TO BEING GREATLY BLESSED IN THE SIGHT OF GOD

WE ARE ALSO TOLD…..Psa. 111:10, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD MEANS TO HAVE A REVERENCE AND RESPECT FOR GOD AND A KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S TRUTH AND TO BE OBEDIENT TO IT

TO POSSESS A PROUD SPIRIT IS ARROGANT AND HAUGHTY…..SOME LACKING KNOWLEDGE HAVE THE MISTAKEN BELIEF THAT ALL THEIR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS HAVE MERIT…..THEY QUESTION THE WISDOM OF GOD…..THEY VOICE THEIR DOUBTS WITH GUSTO…….YET THEY NEED TO LEARN THAT “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble”.

WE BY NATURE KNOW NOTHING AS WE SHOULD FOR THE SCRIPTURES TELL US:

Let no one deceive himself,  If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.  For it is written, He catches the wise in their own craftiness and again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.   1 Cor. 3:18-20

APART FROM GOD’S REVELATION WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE WE CAME FROM NOR WHERE WE ARE GOING……WE KNOW NOT WHAT WE ARE NOR WHY WE EXIST……WE STRUGGLE TO KEEP THE GRASS CUT AND YET SOME WOULD DARE TO QUESTION THE WORD OF GOD

HOWEVER WHEN WE HAVE REVERENCE AND RESPECT FOR THE LORD AND DEPART FROM EVIL…..WE ARE TOLD, “It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones”.  Prov. 3:8

IN THE O.T. WE ARE TOLD…..HONOR THE LORD WITH THAT WHICH HE HAS GIVEN YOU……THE ISRAELITES BROUGHT THE FIRST PORTION OF THEIR HARVEST TO THE LORD TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HE WAS THE OWNER OF THE LAND

AND IN THE N.T. WE ARE TOLD…….But this is I say; He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully, So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you.  That you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.  2Cor. 9:6

THE CHEERFUL GIVER GIVES BECAUSE THEY LOVE GOD AND THEIR FELLOW MAN………WHEN YOU CHEAT GOD IN YOUR GIVING YOU ONLY HURT YOURSELF…..AS WE GIVE TO THE WORK OF THE KINGDOM WE THUS PARTNER WITH GOD

AND WE ARE PROMISED WE SHALL HAVE ENOUGH FOR EVERY GOOD WORK…….ENOUGH FOR OUR OWN NEEDS AND FOR HELPING OTHERS WHEN THE LORD BLESSES US AND THEN WE REFUSE TO PASS THAT BLESSING ALONG TO OTHERS WE WILL REAP AS WE HAVE SOWN OR HAVE NOT SOWN……THE TALENT BURIED BRINGS ONLY JUDGEMENT

Proverbs 3:9-10,  Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the first fruits of all your increase;  So your barns will be filled with plenty,  And your vats will overflow with new wine.

Proverbs 3:11-12….My son, do not despise (reject or condemn),  the chastening of the Lord,  Nor detest his correction; For whom the Lord loves he corrects,  Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

HERE WE SEE THE PRINCIPAL OF SUBMISSION SETFORTH

GODS CHASTENING COMES NOT AS A SIGN OF HIS DISPLEASURE, BUT BECAUSE HE LOVES HIS PEOPLE AND WE ARE TO BE OBEDIENT AND IN SUBJECTION TO OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

…IF YOU ARE WITHOUT CHASTENING, OF WHICH ALL HAVE BECOME PARTAKERS THEN YOU ARE ILLEGITIMATE AND NOT SON.  Heb. 12:8

…we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect,  Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of Spirits and live?  Heb. 12:8-9

IN Proverbs 4:5….Get wisdom, get understanding.

GODLY WISDOM ACQUIRED IS A JEWEL OF GREAT PRICE, SOUND WISDOM AND GODLY DISCERNMENT ARE MUCH NEEDED IN TODAY’S WORLD…..THE ABILITY TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL……MANY THINGS IN THIS WORLD SATISFY FOR A TIME…..YET THEN WE TIRE OF THEM

THE SEA IS BEAUTIFUL YET THE SAILOR TIRES OF THE ENDLESS MONOTONY OF THE WAVES…..DIVINE WISDOM WILL NEVER TIRE THE SOUL…..NO THIEF CAN STEAL HEAVENLY WISDOM NOR MOTH NOR RUST DESTROY IT FOR IT IS ETERNAL…..TO POSSESS IT IS AN ETERNAL TREASURE WHICH WILL AID OUR EARTHLY WELFARE AND GIVE US A SURE CONNECTION TO OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

(PRINCIPAL OF RESPONSIBILITY)

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due.  When it is in the power of your hand to do so.  Prov. 3:27

Render therefore to all their due. Rom.13:7

Owe no one anything except to love one another.  Rom.13:8

WE ARE TO PAY WHAT WE OWE AND PAY IT ON TIME, WE ARE TO BE RESPONSIBLE AND MEET OUR OBLIGATIONS AND LET YOUR YES BE YES AND YOUR NO BE NO. BE A PERSON OF YOUR WORD AND LET YOUR WORD BE YOUR BOND

(PRINCIPAL OF RELATIONSHIPS)

Proverbs 3:29….Do not devise evil against your brother, For he dwells by you for safety’s sake.

IN PROVERBS CHAPTER 6 THERE ARE SIX THINGS MENTIONED THAT GOD HATES AND ONE OF THEM IS A HEART THAT DEVISES WICKED PLANS TO HARM OTHERS……THOSE WHO WOULD DO EVIL AS JUDAS THE PHARISEES OR WICKED HARROD

(PRINCIPAL OF CONTENTMENT)

Do not envy the oppressor.  And choose none of his ways.  Prov. 3:31

THE BOOK OF HEBREWS IN CHAPTER ONE TELLS US…   Be content with such things as you have…

PROVERBS CHAPTER THREE TEACHES US THAT TRUSTING GOD TO DIRECT OUR WAY IS THE WISE CHOICE….OR IT COULD BE TITLED…BEING WISE WHEN WISDOM SEEMS FOOLISH

WE FACE THESE CHOICES EVERY DAY:

YOU WALK OUT OF A STORE AND SEE A MAN DROP TWO TWENTY DOLLAR BILLS……..HE DOESN’T NOTICE.  WHAT DO YOU DO?

MAKING OUT ACHECKFORCHURCHYOU RECEIVE AN UNEXPECTED BILL IN THE MAIL, DO YOU CUT WHAT YOU WOULD GIVE?

YOU RECEIVE YOUR CHANGE AS YOU MAKE A PURCHASE AND NOTICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN SEVERAL DOLLARS MORE THAN YOU SHOULD RECEIVE?  WHAT DO YOU DO?

WE HAVE A CHOICE ONE PATH LOOKS HARD ANOTHER EASY. ONE IS RIGHT AND ONE IS WRONG……ONE LEADS TO BLESSING THE OTHER TO JUDGEMENT

PROVERBS CHAPTER THREE TEACHES US THAT A LIFE FOCUSED ON GOD AND FOLLOWING THE PRINCIPALS FOUND IN HIS WORD IS INDEED THE PATH OF LIFE EVEN WHEN THE PATH OF GOD’S WISDOM SEEMS CONTRARY TO COMMON SENSE
